Atmospheric Variables

Laser Link transmissions are affected by atmospheric conditions. To combat this, our units are fitted with, Automatic Transmit Power Control (ATPC) technology.

ATPC automatically adjusts optical power levels to ensure the remote terminal is operating effectively. A little like the choke on a motor vehicle, on a cold morning, more fuel is required to start the engine. ATPC technology monitors atmospheric variables and movements to mounting brackets to ensure the system is performing at an optimum level.

As you can see from the image above, atmospheric conditions have an effect on ‘line of sight’. Remember, Free Space Optic (FSO) technology requires a line of sight or the use of directional changing equipment to operate.

These results are taken from the Graphmanager system. They clearly show the effect of atmospheric conditions and bracket movement on units without ATCP technology. Drops in signal strength can result in packet loss and networking issues.
